The team has been working hard at finalising all the exciting projects for this years’ festival and we have some exciting updates for you. The festival program is now available on the Streets Alive website, so get your copy now! Join the umbrella momentum and break a Guinness record!!!

Umbrella’s: colourful objects designed to protect us from the elements‐ come rain or sun the umbrella will keep us safe! But an umbrella is also something that creates a defined space around us: an intimate space we can chose to protect or share and therefore the perfect motif to respond to our 2010 festival theme of What is space? Using the umbrella as a physical manifestation of ‘individual space’, the project umbrella momentum is the platform to express ideas of how individuals and as groups feel and interact with their individual and intimate space.

The umbrella momentum during streets alive has two components: Umbrellas in movement: Look out for Umbrellas as they are used in our various art trails and performances throughout the seven day festival which will culminate into a colourful and imaginative street party with dancers and acrobats to create a mass Umbrella image aimed at breaking a Guinness record.

Be involved All Ages All Abilities for the Streets Alive Flash Mob to be held on the street on Sunday 29th August.

Umbrella Installations: Groups of artists and young people are designing umbrellas artistically to

Comments re filming

Gerard Inspired me to do more acting

We need to do more performances here in Launceston.

Jordon I loved it….I just love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rita Fun, creative and somewhat nerve racking at times.

Kay It was beautiful even underneath the darkness.

Becci I felt sick.

Louisa It allowed me to develop new skills.

I like being a team player.

Minna It was a long day which presented some challenges for stamina and focus.

Working behind the camera allowed me to relax rather than in front of a live audience.

Donna I liked working in front of the camera in comparison to presenting to a live audience.

I want to do it again.

Bodhi It as really good.

Loved the look of the lights and the umbrellas in the lights.

Malia Everyone stuck through and worked hard! Camera man and everyone was very patient; cool effective very fun to all work together

Jay Seeing the dancers in front of the camera gave everyone a different energy of working. The focus and attention to detail was outstanding. I enjoyed being able to work in this medium as it was interesting adapting physical performance into filmic form.

I loved it. Laughter…

Focus…

Standby and action.

It’s a rap.

2010 Streets Alive festival launched at the Brisbane Street Mall

The 2010 Streets Alive Youth Arts Festival was launched on April 9th in conjunction with the start of National Youth Week in Launceston’s Brisbane Street Mall. Keeping with this year’s theme “What is space?” the festival team re-claimed Launceston’s most popular public space, the Bris-bane Street Mall and converted it into a public art gallery.

The mall never looked more colourful wrapped in gold, quirky umbrella installations, colourful dancers from Cindy Foster’s Art C Street Crew and a beautiful knitted garden with caterpillars and flowers!

The event culminated with an energetic performance by the talented crew from Indigenous Hip Hop Pro-jects (IHPP), celebrating the fusion of traditional Indigenous culture and hip hop.

The IHHP were in Launceston for a week running hip hop workshops with various schools, colleges and community youth groups during National Youth Week which culminated in a finale at the Launceston Tail-race Centre.

Traffic Graffix

A Visual Art project which will change the grey tagged spaces aka the traffic signal boxes around the Launceston CBD into a gallery of vibrant and quirky images for pass-ers-by to enjoy, appreciate and in-teract with.

Dinosaur Chair

Designed by Ross Byers with artists from the Access Arts Link, this sculptural chair is being fabricated by Certificate II in Engineering students at the Tasma-nian Polytechnic and will be sited out-side the Studio at the Inveresk Cultural Precinct. This functional sculpture will be launched at the festival.

Meet the Launceston Knit Militia

They call themselves the Guerrilla Knitters: a craft group or just a group of friends, who get together every week to delve into their com-mon passion, Knitting!

But Launceston-based Knit Militia is all of the above and more! Mothers, daughters, locals, internationals, teachers, architects, hippies, students, jewellers, shop assistants, disability workers and pensioners have joined forces with the aim to alter otherwise mundane objects and challenge our perception of a very tradi-tional art form: Knitting.

Originally formed to support Access Arts Link in their Streets Alive Arts Trail during Novem-ber 2009, the Launceston Knit Militia are a group of knitters aged 8 – 80 who share a pas-sion for all things tactile, tea, a good yarn, street art and community. The group now has around 20 members and a growing number of visitors into the cosy lounge room where the group meets. They have now spread beyond Launceston with members from Cygnet, Hobart and even Canberra.

The Launceston Knit Militia aims to inspire a new generation of knitters, and for those who already knit, to take this traditional domestic craft out of the private lounge room and into the public sphere.

In 2010 the Knit Militia is working on KNIT THE CITY, a project which will transform ordinary public spaces into interesting, inspiring places using knitting! Knit the City consists of three projects which will be showcased in conjunction with Streets Alive and Junction 2010 from August 24-30, 2010.

The knitted garden: a “growing” project which will create a beautiful welcoming environment and showcase the uncon-ventional use of wool.

Knit Graffiti will transform our city spaces with knitting

The Giant Teapot: a giant knitted tea cosy for Launceston’s largest teapot for artist Ross Byers’ Tour de Clarendon pro-ject. To know more or join contact Kim Schneiders.

Part of a worldwide movement of knitted Graffiti artists, or Yarn Bombers, the Launceston Knit Militia are a group of knitters aged 8 – 80. We share a passion for all things tactile, tea, a good yarn, street art and community.

Originally the Launceston Knit Militia formed to support Access Arts Link in their arts trail: ‘Art Traces in Public Spaces’, a one day event during which the city of Launceston was left decorated with colourful art pieces and Knitted Graffiti.

Streets Alive is heading into its biggest year yet in 2010!

The Monster Makers is a wildly interactive adventure for children and a spectacular street-show for adults and families. The children take over Igor’s laboratory as assistants, bring his recently acquired monster to life and take the creature on the road to face the menacing challenges of the big and dangerous city. Children lead, adults follow: as it should be.

Join the students of Mowbray Heights Primary School and Sacred Heart Primary School as they take their newly brought-to-life monster for a walk.

PERFORMANCE DETAILS

Saturday 13 March 2010

12:00 pm – Mowbray Heights Primary, Mrs. Cumming’s and Miss. Benson’s year 3/4 class

1:00 pm – Mowbray Heights Primary, Mrs. Woodcock’s and Mrs. Eade’s year 3/4 class

2:00 pm – Sacred Heart Primary, Ms. Summers’ year 4 class

3:00 pm – Sacred Heart Primary, Ms. Summers’ year 4 class

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The children will be attached to the monster via long ropes, which they will use to control his actions. They will have to work together to balance the ensuing anarchy with their desire to stay out of trouble. The Monster, in turn, will begin to allow his various attributes to take over. For example, if he’s been programmed as a loving monster, he will hug the public, playfully pushing the bounds of propriety. The children will have to decide just how much is too much. Eventually, the monster will escape into the city, the kids return to the theatre to debrief and discuss just what exactly went wrong. In the final moment, the monster will return and get everybody up to sing and dance.

This idea of giving kids the power and ownership over important aspects of the production flows naturally from our other work with kids where we endeavour to provide them opportunities to control the situation, giving them some small power.

The Monster Makers is essentially about the responsibility that comes with any kind of power; to quote Spiderman’s uncle Ben: “with great power comes great responsibility,” something we always remind the Haircuts by Children students, most of whom recognize and appreciate the source of the quote.

Welcome to Streets Alive for 2010!

Your space, my space, our space, leg space, headspace, breathing space, outer space, imaginary space, public space, body space…Space is shrinking and we aim to reclaim it!

Streets Alive Youth festival is back and this time we are asking- What is space? Questioning young people’s notions of personal and community space, Streets Alive in 2010 will transform city spaces with art from schools and studios.

In its fifth edition, this festival will involve thousands of young people from across the state, expanding their skills through a huge variety of arts projects for taking over the streets of Launceston during August.

So how do we do it? It’s quite simple really. Taking local artists, drop in a mix of dance, music, visual arts, site specific work, mixed media, carnival and film, a sprinkle of human rights and most importantly – YOU – young people of Northern Tasmania and you are guaranteed a heady mix!! The festival is open to all and everyone is welcome to pitch in and play with their creative side….so whether you are a student, artist, teacher, or just a random Joe interested in the arts, come be a part of this phenomenon!

We are inviting people to work with us on a variety of projects including knit graffiti, projections, quirky installations, random acts with umbrellas and inspiring performances including Out of the Blue – Hip Hop to the top: A combination of local, indigenous, national hip hop dancers working together towards a final dance off!

If you would like to participate in future Streets Alive events be sure to get your teachers online to www.streetsalive.com.au
